"John Sherman was born in Ohio,but his family goes back to Dedham,Essex County,England.One of his ancestors,Roger Sherman,was the only person to sign the Continental Association,the Declaration of Independence,the Articles of Confederation,and the United States Constitution.It is this sort of historical burden that he has to bear,as well as his faith in God.His brother(William)also,was a famous General in the Civil War.I originally only was interested in his experiences when the United States resumed specie payments on 1/01/1879.He was United States Treasurer under Rutherford B. Hayes.He was a senator from Ohio when they agreed to resume specie payments earlier in the decade.As Treasury Secretary,he oversaw the bond sales to finance the purchase of gold in case there was any pent up demand starting on January 1st.Instead,the Greenbacks went to par due to some interesting things.Grain harvests were lousy in Europe and they had to import American grain.That was on top of the gold they already imported to America.America was on equal footing with Europe.They bought from America,they had to pay for it with their gold.Any discount on American debt soon disappeared.You have to understand that the American people were very conversant about financial matters,even if they were misinformed.This is John Sherman's autobiography.It contains letters to him and from him from some very important people.There are also excerpts from his speeches in Congress,as well as other speeches that tended to be printed in the newspapers all over America.He was trained as a lawyer,was elected to the House of Representatives for Ohio,and was appointed Senator from Ohio by their state legislature.That's not all.He writes about the period that leads up to the Civil War.He shows that there were really some racist people walking around America in those days.Racism in America in the 20th and 21st Centuries takes after these people.The Confederate States of America had some sympathy in the north.Even some of the state banks lost some serious value holding bonds from the southern states after the beginning of the Civil War.Some of the actions of James Buchanon could be seen as treason as it related to property that was taken in the south by the Confederates and ultimately used against Union forces.This was something that Lincoln had to get over,and fast.He was soon spending a million dollars a day.It was plain to see that people weren't going to be shy taking sides.This was really about America's peculiar institution called slavery.Lincoln had to realize that countries like England supported this because they needed cotton.This was a problem that he had to overcome.Thus the Emancipation Proclamation.This was only the beginning.This had to followed by amendments to the U.S. Constitution,Reconstruction,and that's not all.69 years after this book was written,the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed.If this turns out to be a never ending story,America should be embarrassed.America should read John Sherman's book if there is something they don't understand about this problem."
