Olivia A Novel Dorothy Strachey Regina Marler Books Reviews

  • This book is written eloquently for the most part and mainly consists of a dreamy type of idealization. The story is simple; girl goes to school in France, girl loves her teacher, teacher has to leave -that's about it. It is a short work(thank God) and just didn't really impact me much(okay I hated it and wanted to tear it up). Essentially, the teacher is made out to be this fantasy-like perfect person that many of the girls love while Olivia who is young and naive tries to figure out if her feelings toward the teacher are based on more than just respect and admiration. The book goes on...and on..and on.. about how perfect the teacher is, about how her voice sounds about how she does this and that, about how rare her blood type is(okay I made that last one up but you get the point). I easily could have gone the rest of my life without reading this and made it just fine.
I will say, I get this is a story of self-discovery and blah blah blah and I think it had potential that was wasted on some lackluster story. By the end of the book my biggest takeaway was, "Holy shit, it's finally over." So, that aspect of the book made me pretty happy(sadly enough). Some people might like it and that's cool I'm not saying you have bad taste(hell maybe you do, I don't know, maybe I do). Literature is often subjective, I'm just saying I would rather walk over a hot bed of coals(or glass, or both) than read this again. I felt no connection with any of the characters, probably because the whole book was about how flawless the teacher is. You'd seriously think the teacher could walk on water, or grow money on a tree or hell, grant you three wishes or something immortal like that. I never knew 100 pages could be so dreadfully painful. I'd recommend this book if you 1. want to fall asleep 2. want to be really super annoyed 3. want to wish you never read it 4. want to make a bad day worse 5. have plenty of aspirin to take 6. find yourself in the apocalypse and this is the only book left
  • This short novel written by Dorothy Strachey (her only novel) in the 1940s captures the thrill of first adolescent love. There is nothing salacious or tasteless about Olivia's intense feelings for the young woman who is her teacher. What is left unsaid, is whether the feelings are reciprocal.
  • This novel by Dorothy Strachey, sister of famous biographer and eccentric, Lytton Strachey, is a little jewel of a well-written novel. Probably based on Dorothy's experiences in a girl's school, it describes a English teenager's crush on a school mistress in late 19th century France. This novel is not about sex or being a lesbian. It is about anticipation and the overwhelming need for affection and approval. It is a classic, "coming of age" novel with (for once!) a young girl instead of a young boy. Quick, enthralling read!
  • I bought this book for a friend. It was listed as a paperback but was actually hardbound. My friend is thrilled with the book. He says that the quality is outstanding and the art is wonderful. It is his absolute favorite book.
  • The artist is great. The only problem I have with this is the quality of print. I did not receive the deluxe edition like I thought I would. But again...this does not take away from the actual artist and the pieces in this book.
  • great
  • It is a beautifully written very frank description of a young adolescents experience in a boarding school. The sensitivity of feeling the othentic emotions and the sadness of growing up in a world of prejudice is very truthfully described.
  • One of the best I've read in a long time.
