  • If you are looking to do this mainly on your own outside inside conventional class this absolutely was the wrong book for you. If that is your situation, look at Lifeprint . Com
And check out videos walking you through research on language acquisition. Bottom line, this book follows a format that many of us are familiar with from high school language classes. It is over burdened with the grammar at the start and goes through the sentences that are not reflective of how the language is used. These types of approaches typically lead to frustration and not learning meaningful information.

My biggest complaint really are the dialogue created to help you practice. Many of them are written in a fashion that is not consistent with ASL structure. Often they are overly wordy, missing how succinct and elegant the language is.
  • The book itself might be good but I got the kindle edition and hate it. Its very difficult to make the sign pictures large enough for me to see them and you can't print anything out so book is totally useless for me.
  • I recommend this book to all my friends who are serious about ASL, in particular those who are learning online and need a more formal grammar supplement to go along with their less formal learning. The principles of ASL grammar are clearly described and frequently repeated in examples, helping the student to absorb the ideas. Still pictures aren't really enough on their own, so it's best to combine this book with classroom or video instruction to understand the images, but the book helps students learn how to adapt the vocabulary they learn online to create grammatically correct phrases and stories. The grammar presented is ASL, not SEE, making this book much more trustworthy than most on the market. Examples of topics covered include classifiers, sentence structure, asking questions, negation, and time concepts.
  • This is the book I needed for my ASL 1 class in college. It has great information and is very easy to use. Includes signs and the ASL grammar rules in a easy to remember format. It also has information about Deaf culture, like how to get people's attention, interactions, etc. It is a must have book if you are learning to sign.
  • There are a lot of good signs in this set, great for use as a tool to learn ASL. I would not recommend attempting to learn it without taking a course, however. You may be able to teach yourself a few basic signs, but there is a lot more to signing than simply knowing a few words. I think instead I'll hunt around for a more comprehensive sign language course, although I may still use these to help me practice.
  • Bought this book in the edition and was very satisfied with its teaching. One point about it though, I was disappointed . The "Master signs" are almost impossible to see. The pictures are in "miniature" size and hard to see. I was still interested in this book, so I bought the Book also from an Vendor (Jersey Ashore) and it is just perfect. I am still reading/studying it and it is one of the best books on ASL I have found and I have many. John R
  • I received E-Z, American Sign language within a few days of ordering and cannot seem to put down the book. As a beginner to ASL, I am taking online classes with signing online to learn ASL and this book is the book of choice for class. I couldn't be happier with this purchase. So if anyone is contemplating purchasing a book, this is the one, even if you are learning on your own. Easy to follow, with lots of pictures and quizzes to sharpen your understanding.
    Good luck.
  • I use this book for ASL (level 3) and the lessons are easy to understand. It does a great job of giving some background to the sign as well as sections about technology, history, and much more. For the classroom, this book cannot be beat!

Ethical questions dominate current political and academic agendas. While government think-tanks ponder the dilemmas of bio-ethics, medical ethics and professional ethics, respect for human rights and reverence for the Other have become matters of broad consensus. Alain Badiou, one of the most powerful voices in contemporary French philosophy, explodes the facile assumptions behind this recent ethical turn. He shows how our prevailing ethical principles serve ultimately to reinforce an ideology of the status quo, and fail to provide a framework for an effective understanding of the concept of evil. In contrast, Badiou summons up an “ethic of truths” which is designed both to sustain and inspire a disciplined, subjective adherence to a militant cause (be it political or scientific, artistic or romantic), and to discern a finely demarcated zone of application for the concept of evil. He defends an effectively super-human integrity over the respect for merely human rights, asserts a partisan universality over the negotiation of merely particular interests, and appeals to an “immortal” value beyond the protection of mortal privileges.

Ebook Ethics An Essay on the Understanding of Evil Alain Badiou Peter Hallward 9781859842973 Books

"In this book, Alain Badiou takes exception to the current Western understanding of ethics in terms of human rights and its violations, violations which are seen to be the justification for the various humanitarian interventions into Third World political situations during the past few decades. His main point is that this understanding of ethics tends to view the human being as a victim, entailing the splitting of its Subject into both victim and the victim's (Western heroic) benefactor. Seeing the human being in this way is tantamount to degrading him to the level of his merely animal nature, a mortal and transitory being whose life fails to signify anything special beyond his mere suffering. Evil is defined in this understanding as that which is hostile to human rights.

But Badiou sees the creation of the human Subject from out of the merely human animal as an ennobling process of participation in what he calls a "truth event." Such truth events are singularities which irrupt into status quo situations within the four separate domains of art, science, politics and love and function as decisive ruptures with "what has gone before." These immanent breaks -- Galileo's creation of modern physics, the meeting of Heloise and Abelard, Haydn's creation of the classical style in music, the French Revolution, etc. etc. -- introduce novelties into the instituted knowledges of the time, forcing them to be recoded in terms of the new subject-language. It is precisely an individual's fidelity to one or another of these various truth events that shifts him from the mode of a merely transitory and ephemeral human animal to becoming a human Subject proper, which ennobles him and lifts him out of his merely quotidian situation, causing him to become the human Immortal that he, in reality, is.

Evil then becomes redefined in accordance with Badiou's truth process as a function of the very process of fidelity to a truth singularity. There is not one overarching Ethics, according to Badiou, but ethics of multiple singularities, each one of which is contingent upon the nuances of a singular situation. But the truth process itself redefines evil as a function of a truth event in three ways: evil exists when subjects are faithful not to a real truth event, but to the simulacrum of one, which is defined as a truth event that excludes universal applicability, such as the Nazis with their Aryan exclusivity; secondly, it is defined as the betrayal of a subject to his own truth event, such as when one loses faith in a truth event due to the difficulties such fidelity imposes upon the individual's life, sometimes to the point of wrecking it; and thirdly, evil results when a truth event becomes authoritarian and seeks to name and exhaust all the elements in the set of a particular situation that the event is involved in restructuring, to the point where everything is captured and named to exhaustion. But this is a form of inflation, and magnifies the power of the truth event beyond its proper bounds.

Badiou's book is an excellent place to start for the first-timer to Badiou, since it avoids the mathematical complexities of set theory which burden the reader in "Being and Event." Badiou strips his event ontology down here in this book and shows how it is capable of being linked to a redefinition of an ethics of multiple singularities that can be used to counter the One Ethical Way which the West tends to impose upon the rest of the world through its globalizing processes. I highly recommend it.

Ethics An Essay on the Understanding of Evil Alain Badiou Peter Hallward 9781859842973 Books Reviews

  • This little book by Alain Badiou is an intervention in the contemporary discourse on Ethics. Badiou targets "negative ethics", arguing that it is limited to forms of damage or violence minimization. For Badiou, such perspectives fail to address illegitimate forms of power or domination keeping people inscribed in existing situations. Badiou proposes an affirmative ethics, one sustained by commitments to Truths. Badiou is interested in those rare moments when a person involved in the busyness of everyday concerns is suddenly transformed by an Event, forcing the person to either follow through with its consequences or surrender. Following a Pauline structure (St. Paul), Badiou names this ethical endurance "Fidelity". The book also includes an excellent interview of Badiou with Peter Hallward, discussing Badiou's influences, philosophy, and politics. This book is one of Badiou's most accessible works making it an ideal entry point for beginners and an enjoyable read for those already acquainted. As philosopher Slavoj Žižek says of Badiou, “A figure like Plato or Hegel walks here among us!”

  • This was the first book (but not essay) by French Philosopher Alain Badiou I have read. It is made quite clear from the begining both in the long scholarly introduction by the translator Peter Hallward and in Badiou's own introduction that this book was written for French high scool kids as an introduction to ethics. Readers expecting a hard hitting schorlarly work on the nature of evil might be dissapointed and bemused French high schooler's might be scratching their heads as to what exactly this book is about but the rest of us are rewarded with an exciting hybrid. Not quite a high school primer (Badiou expertly dismisses the whole western concept of ethics) but a lot more accessable than Badiou's normal set-theory laden philosophical writing. This is at heart a manifesto for a new kind of ethics one that supports radical politics against the staus quo and encourages action rather than inaction. Badiou recognises the equality and shared nature of all people rather than being preoccupied by difference.

Ideas and excitement crackle of the page a worthwhile read.
  • Badiou is the most unique voice in radical philosophy. To sum this up to understand what evil really is, is to be willing to die to end it (or resist it).
  • I stumbled across this book by word of mouth. Throughout the entire book I felt that Dr. Badiou had good arguments, & I would recommend his Ethics book to any aspiring ethicist.
  • I already have the book. However, I purchased it for my church book store and I will purchase more books from you for them.

Les Casques Militaires French Edition Yves Plasseraud 9780982806302 Books Reviews

  • This book covers the military helmets of every non-Anglophone country (Surinam excepted) in Central and South America and the Caribbean. The format is essentially that of the country articles in M.Plasseraud's earlier 3 volume Casques du Combat series (which the relevant articles in this book now effectively supercedes), but with more space to devoted to ceremonial as well as combat helmets. As in Casques, there is also background on each country's military and political development which gives a context to the factors governing helmet fashions (ie successive French, German and US influences.) As well as Army helmets, The articles also cover helmets issued to countries' police forces, navy and air forces as well as tank and airborne helmets, and accessories such as nets and covers (and even the types of goggles worn during Argentina's Falklands adventure). Obviously coverage varies from place to place, there is simply a lot more to say about Argentine or Brazilian helmets than about Haitian or Dominican ones, while Paraguay didn't even issue helmets to its soldiers during the Chaco War.

The French,in which the main text is written, is clear and easy to comprehend, without any grammatical or vocabulary flourishes that might make it a challenge to anyone with no more than high school or undergraduate French. The English and (I assume) Spanish summaries do capture the main developments, and are referenced to the illustrations in the text (which are numerous and usually in colour.) Yves Plasseraud and his collaborators merit our vote of thanks for putting this all together.

All in all this book worth getting and is a valuable refrerence for collectors, historians and military model makers.
  • A very thorough study of the helmets used by the armed forces of the various Latin American nations from the time of their independence to the present days. In particular, the book is thoroughly illustrated, providing rare photographs of these soldiers that, along with displaying their helmets, show their uniforms, weapons, and equipment. Highly recommended.
  • As a collector of pre-1945 military helmets for some 40 years, I will say that this is the best and most comprehensive reference to Latin American headgear that I have come across. This is a long overdue book addressing one of the most obscure areas of militaria collecting. There is precious little information on any aspect of Latin American militaria outside of Spanish-language books published in the home countries, which are difficult to obtain. The militaria itself is also scarce and the author of this book has indeed performed incredible research to assemble so much information and good photos. I highly recommend this book.
  • This is a great book. If you are interested in South American history, military history, military headgear especially helmets then this is a must. it is well laid out with good photos of helmets ("studio style" as well as "action shots") with some scetches and diagrams. The main text is in French with a Spanish and English summary. I am not a Francophone but even with a couple of years of schoolboy french I could follow the concise text. I would recommend it as well worth adding to the reference collection
  • I have to say that a couple of pictures are not well printed or reproduced , but this is the only fault I've noted.
  • Finally a book concerning an unsual field about helmets!
Mr. Y. Plasseraud, one of the author of the three books "les casques de Combat", this time signs a book dedicated to the helmets in Latin America.
The book is a mine of information on the helmets adopted or rejected by the states of this distant continent. Many photographs from private collections and museums, as well as in situ photographs illustrate the paragraphs describing the various models.
For each State, a historical and geopolitical developments in the country is used to replace helmets in their historical context. The helmet is not only an object of protection, but is a reflect of the political tendency of its time.

A summary in English and Spanish makes it accessible to non-francophones.

An excellent book for both helmets collectors, and history buffs!

Alien Prince Bride SciFi Alien Romance Vi Voxley 9781532842214 Books Reviews

  • This book is a great addition to Vi Voxley's alien brides series, which has become one of my favorite sci-fi romance series.
Violet, eldest daughter of The Overlord, is one of seven eligible Altreen calaya, prizes for which warriors will compete to the death. Areon is a bumbling former guard and friend who promised to return to fight for her in her father's tournament after being banished for bumping into her. The Raider Prince, a mercenary who disguises his Altreen heritage, has also entered the calaya tournament to fight for her.
Altreens, once holders of a vast empire, are now scattered and want to be great again. Calayas are the key to their recovery since their sons are great warriors, champions, the strongest having special abilities. Daughter's are highly prized and targets for kidnapping, however, requiring fearsome mates who can protect them. Violet wants the strongest warrior, the winner, as her protector and has the Prince in mind as her choice, even though she has never met him or forgotten the young Areon. But as the tournament begins, and bodies begin to pile up, it's clear her father also has the irreverent Prince in his sights, just not for the same reasons as Violet. And Areon could easily fall in the rigged games along with him, leaving her to an abusive monster of a champion, her father's choice.
    .
  • As a calamari she was used to a life of ease being given whatever she wanted protected and safe . Her father was the overlord and her mother was also a calamari . She had been the prize most sought after in her tournament. Violet and her 5 sisters had heard the stories. Now Violet 2 of her sisters and 4 other calaya's had their tournament to look forward to.
Aeron entered the tournament to win Violet as his bride . That was the purpose of the whole spectacle. Show your warrior skills win the prize . Being the mercenary Raider Prince would not win him anything so he is hiding behind his alter ego Aeron . A fun loving clumsy slightly awkward ex guard who was in the employ of the overlord 3 years ago . He and Violet fell in love her father got angry with him and banished him . Now he's back ready to win her as his prize . This is a 5 star review. Great story great characters loved it!
  • While spying on the Overlord, the Raider Prince falls in love with his daughter. Exiled for stumbling against her, he swears to come back and win her as his bride. After three years of conquering every foe, he keeps his promise, and secretly enters the bride games, along with his trusted friend and second-in-command. He knows the Overlord wants to kill him, his former guard, but also wants to kill the Raider Prince, his secret identity. No one knows who the Raider Prince is, except for his men, and they would never betray him. The Overlord is so obsessed with killing the Raider Prince, he's willing to kill every contender for the hands of the seven princesses that are the prizes. Not content to let them kill each other for the prizes, he devises deadly surprises like poisonous beasts; whirling blades that come out of the floor of the arena, in unpredictable places and times; and moveable walls that spring up and form mini arenas with overwhelming odds, and unbeatable champions. There are several romances, political and familial intrigue, and daring escapes. A treat for all readers.
  • This book was very entertaining. At first I thought I wouldn't care for Violet but she had reasons for the way she thought and acted and once that became clear I was onboard with the book. Now the Prince was a whole nother story. He kept us guessing for quite awhile although I did realize who he was much sooner than the big reveal. I liked that Violet grew so much during the story and really liked that we got to see three princesses get their HEA. Oh, and of course when they finally get to the sex it is spectacular. I definitely recommend this book and would like to see them again once the Prince and his crew have his goals for the future. Enjoy! 😀
  • I loved the Raider Prince aka Areon. A genius, with a sharp wit who can out Mc Gyver, McGyer. His second in command, Reim, Areon's reality check, the voice of reason, and as funny as he is smart. Violet, the women Areon loves is hard to like a first, but she turns out to be strong and smart. Loved the world building. A fun, but brutal at times, fast paced and steamy story. Would love to see how Aeron's new world order works out!
  • This was one of those books where you start it just for something to read, but then you read it because it's just that damn good! Have a book hangover this morning! But am anything but annoyed because this is one Epic read! If you're looking for Romance that doesn't just take place in the bedroom, but also on the battlefield and looking for a wickedly sence of humor. You've found it!!
  • The characters are strong and have a clear voice. The plot is intense. The sex scenes are few, but very hot and meaningful when they happen. Very inventive scenery. I am excited to find a new author who can capture and hold my attention through the whole book and make me look for another to start immediately.
  • Picture a Brion General with a sense of humor! This book was a thrill to read. You never knew how the plot would twist. I am just suprised that Aeron didn't kill Violet ' s father the Overlord.
    I know I would have.
But then it might have upset Violet and we can't have that!

  • This is an excellent and enjoyable guide on how to begin a wedding officiating business. Extremely well-written, clear and to the point. For those that don't want to waste any time, whether you seek other guidance or not, reading this is essential. It answers most questions you might have and creates confidence in following the path to this fun and meaningful business venture. If you're at all considering officiating weddings, reading this is a must! I found it incredibly helpful and inspiring for all the reasons above. I also love its tone. Ebook Rough Guide Italian Phrasebook Rough Guides Phrasebooks Rough Guides Books

"This phrasebook IS FOR PEOPLE WHO WANT TO/or WANT TO TRY TO ACTUALLY SAY SOME THINGS IN ITALIAN ON A TRIP. If you want something for emergencies and/or desire a phrasebook to use for its written sentences/requests/words; with an intention of showing such written words to others when you need help, THEN a Rough Guide Phrasebook IS NOT FOR YOU. (In such a case consider a Berlitz or Lonely Planet phrasebook---both of those are better for worst-case emergencies such as going to a doctor, etc., but if you want to ask such questions as How much is this? Do you have this in Blue? What is your name? What time does the museum close? Then Rough Guide Italian will be more useful to you. This phrasebook also includes MP3 audio to help you practice useful phrases too.)

Rough Guides are structured completely different from most phrase books: The first several dozen pages give you numbers, days of the week, time, etc., and a 20 minute course in grammar. Oh no, you might be saying, but it is presented very simply. For instance it presents a handful of common verbs and their conjugations. So on one page you can see how to say "I have," "he has, "etc. and "I like," "he/ she likes," etc. The rest of the book is split between, in this case, an English-Italian dictionary, an Italian-English dictionary, and a 20 page menu reader. What makes the English-Italian dictionary pages unique, though, is that most every other page (at least) has dialogue boxes relating to the most useful word(s) on that particular page. For instance, when you thumb through the book for the word "live," you get the word itself, but also the phrases "I live in..." and "Where do you live?" It'll take you 10 minutes to find such a phrase in Berlitz or Lonely Planet in their "getting to know others' section. But because Rough Guide is structured as a dictionary, with hundreds of really useful phrases highlighted in boxes within, you can access something you want to say rather swiftly...and actually deliver it just a minute or so after looking for it. Add the grammar section, where you learn useful verbs and how to conjugate their past tenses, and the number section, and you can learn easily to chat with someone about where you are from, where you are going, where you have traveled thus far, what you like/liked, and so on. Likewise, knowing have to say "have" make sit easily to ask whether a hotel has rooms, whether the room has a shower (after thumbing through the book for the word for shower), etc. And when the answer comes back that the hotel doesn't have, or say "we have," you can actually catch what they are saying.

If still not persuaded, next time you're in a bookstore compare a Berlitz, a Lonely Planet, and a Rough Guide language phrase book side by side. Lonely Planet Italian, for example, is basically several pages of basic grammar followed by many sections of phases you won't likely ever use. For instance, the guide provides several pages each of lists of occupations, nationalities, items of stationary, colors, insects, flowers and so on. Also provided are pat phrases to employ at a hotel's front desk, at a doctor's, at the optometrist, and eating out, among other mini-sections. The book, in effect, is set up to be taken out to be used once a day, if that. It's an improvement on Berlitz phrase books, but not by much. (Berlitz simply divides their books into 10 or so color coded sections such as: "sightseeing," "relaxing," "shopping," traveling around," "money," "eating out," etc.)

So, if you just want a book for emergencies (say, breaking a leg, etc.) then Berlitz and/or Lonely Planet phrase books will serve you well...in your pocket until you are faced with such a situation, since they do have many more specific terms (like 50 different parts of the body), but if you really want to be able to say some things in Italian on a daily basis during your trip you'll be much better served by Rough Guide Italian. (Don't miss Venice, of course, but if you're going in summer then do consider seeing Venice another time, in another season; high summer is not the best time to see Venice.) Cheers"

From reviews of the first edition

"A succinct and informed account of [Flagler's] leadership in transforming Florida's economy."--American Historical Review

"An important contribution to the understanding of Standard Oil's extended partnership and how the personal desire of Flagler led to the early development of Florida's Atlantic Coast."--The Historian

Henry M. Flagler (1830-1913), the ambitious Gilded Age tycoon who designed and built much of Florida's fashionable east coast, rode to success on the rails.

As John D. Rockefeller's closest adviser in the 1870s, Flagler helped assemble the Standard Oil empire. In this thoroughly researched biography, Akin shows that Flagler understood early in his career that cheap freight rates determined industrial profits. Portraying Flagler as an aggressive entrepreneur, Akin documents his shrewd negotiations to obtain reduced rates, rebates, and drawbacks from the railroads, thus assuring Standard Oil's national domination over oil transportation costs.

Flagler drove himself as hard as he drove a bargain, obsessed with the desire to create a monument to himself that he called "my domain." His legacy was no less than modern Florida. In 1885, at the age of fifty-five, he turned his attention away from Standard Oil and began construction of the Ponce de León luxury hotel in St. Augustine, the city where he had honeymooned with his second wife. Realizing he could never fill its rooms unless better transportation with the North was available, he embarked on the second railroad venture of his lifetime, creation of the Florida East Coast Railway.

Flagler's resort empire eventually included The Breakers in Palm Beach and the Royal Palm in Miami; his Atlantic coast railroad extended all the way to Key West, an engineering achievement that was called the "eighth wonder of the world." By the beginning of the twentieth century, Flagler dominated not just the resort and railroad industries in Florida but steamship and agricultural operations, too. Florida politicians gave his projects preferential treatment, even changing the state's divorce law so he could marry for a third time.

Woven into this biography are details about Flagler's family, personality, three marriages, alienation from his only son, and devotion to the Presbyterian church--copy that fueled society gossip columns from New York to Palm Beach for decades.

Edward N. Akin, author of Mississippi An Illustrated History and other works on southern history, taught at Mississippi College in Clinton. His biography of Henry Flagler won the 1985 Phi Alpha Theta manuscript prize.

  • Great book on an intriguing personality. Anyone looking for a history lesson on the making of South Florida needs to read the book.
  • I love history and I had just taken a trip to St Augustine. I just had to find out more about the Flaglers. Wonderful book.
  • This book stresses the business aspects of Flagler's life, with much detail on his work with Standard Oil. The section on his years in Florida was of more interest to me, being a Florida resident. I would have liked more personal information about the man, however, although I recognize that it may not be available.

    .
  • This book is not one that catches the reader attention from the beginning. You have to keep reading a d thirty minutes at a time is all I can take.
  • Have not completed yet but ties in oil, economics, politics and big business at the turn of the 19th century. A "must read" for the serious economic history person.
  • Good history book, especially if you live in Florida
  • Read this book at the library, it's a Good book, it's more of a Biography on the man,and it's more of a scholarly approach as oppose to a Quick read. it's worth checking out to Read UP on Henry Flagler. I recommend Speedway to Sunshine.

This collection of over 3000 quotations uncovers the diversity of fundamental questions concerning God and Man, drawing on all the great books of the world's religions. Here are the words of prophets, scholars, mystics on matters spiritual and moral.

"This is one of three books of religious quotations I keep handy for preparing my sermons and other religious writings. The other two are The Quotable Spirit (Lorie & Mascetti) and Treasury of Religious Quotations (Tomlinson).
Parrinder is Emeritus Professor of the Comparative Study of Religions at the University of London. His book is the most scholarly and philosophical of the three. Many of the quotations seem to be chosen to illustrate theological positions rather than for any power to inspire. The book also has a greater emphasis on British sources than the other two.
The 3000 quotes are grouped under 177 topics. Unlike other sources which order topics alphabetically, Parrinder divides the 177 topics into 18 thematic chapters. A subject index is included for the more alphabetically inclined. However, variants of the same term (e.g. agnostic, agnosticism, and agnostics) are indexed separately. An author index is also included.
Parrinder's Christian orientation shows both in the selection of topics and in the selection of quotations. Nearly every topic starts with a quote from the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament) and a quote from the New Testament (usually using the King James translation for both). Some of these selections seem forced, as if Parrinder feels he must include two Bible quotes for each topic. All other quotations are placed after the Bible quotes.
The sources most frequently cited (other than scriptures or founders of world religions) are: Aristotle, Augustine of Hippo, Francis Bacon, William Blake, Book of Common Prayer, Albert Camus, John Donne, Meister Eckhart, Mircea Eliade, R. W. Emerson, E. E. Evans-Pritchard, Samuel Johnson, C. G. Jung, John Milton, Blaise Pascal, Plato, John Ruskin, William Shakespeare, Alfred Tennyson, Charlotte Vaudeville (on Kabir), and William Wordsworth.
An earlier edition of the book was published as A Dictionary of Religious & Spiritual Quotations."

Her heart was fragile from too much pain--would her defenses push Ross away?

Ross felt panicked. His words had hurt her. It surprised him, given the way she handled the harsh circumstances of her life. First her mother's death. Then her father's. Then losing the land.

Was his compassion for the vulnerable young woman turning to love? And if it was love, what would he do now? "Please, God," he prayed. "Help me. Show me."

A poignant tale about love fulfilled, A Gathering of Memories will capture the hearts and minds of romantics everywhere.

"What can I say? I didn't think I was ever going to make it through because I cried so much! I loved the ending. It was so very romantic, and so innocent! I'm also glad Lori Wick put the epilogue in so I would know just what happened in the end. I wish we could continue with this family forever, but this is a good stopping place.

I ached for Amy who remained childless. I was so happy she and Silas were able to take in the five orphans, and I was happy to read about Mandy and Ross as they fell in love. The whole thing was indeed romantic. I'm just so happy!!! It was just an EXCELLENT book. They all were wonderful, but I must say this one may have been the best of them all...

Luke and Christine, Silas and Amy, Paul and Abby, and now Ross and Amanda...And another surprise couple that got together. I won't spill the beans on who it was, but I was pleasantly surprised!

Now, on to the next series "The Californians.""

  • This final book in the series was as good as the others. The only thing I would have changed was the whole situation with the land and Aaron Marks. I wouldn't change the result of it, but maybe a few more twists and turns, and a little more in-depth description of the gun scene, rather than telling it in flashback. Otherwise a great story. I love how it tells Ross' love story. He was in the last book, and I think readers would be curious about his continued story.

  • The forth and final book in the A Place Called Home Series. (sigh) Although I enjoyed all four books, this one may have been the best of the bunch. Silas and Amy were so sweet. (I picture Sam Elliot in my mind as Silas) Most of the book - well, at least a good part of it - was like a reunion. We got to revisit every as well as make some new friends. And the way the Cameron's adopted the Jackson's was so heart warming. Sad to see the series end.
  • Really enjoyed this book, the whole series was captivating! Enjoyed how every character grew and evolved! Each story touched my 💓 in a special way!
  • I loved this entire series! Totally in my top 5 of Novel Series. Lori is great, really takes you into the story, into this family, so much that it was really sad to let them go.
This book is about the gathering of all the family but has this special twist where we find they had place to enlarge the family to new members! Specially for Amy and Silas.
Love to see them all reunited. It was a pleasure to read!.
  • as advertised
  • Wicks books are always good and inspiring. I wish she would write more in current times. Love her quoting scripture.
  • Great book. Geat author

Green Lantern Kyle Rayner Vol 2 Ron Marz Darryl Banks Books Reviews

  • Really great collection. So happy DC is finally collecting this run of Green Lantern, cross overs and all!
  • Kyle Rayner was my introduction to the Lantern Universe. His are the best origin stories for anyone new to the Corps. 90s fun everywhere in this book. Banks art is gorgeous.
  • Growing up in the 90s, this is my favorite Green Lantern! So happy to finally have a collection starting for this GL!
  • These are THE BEST green lantern comics of all time! I love the entire history and mythos of the Green Lantern character, from Golden Age Alan Scott with his ring's wood weakness to Silver Age Hal Jordan and GL Corps with their rings' weakness of all things yellow (watch out for Sinestro and Mongul!) but when Ron Marz took over in the early 90s, it was pure comic magic. I have never enjoyed reading any comics as much as the first time I read Ron Marz's run on Green Lantern (starting with issue #48 I believe). He made the characters matter by showing they were vulnerable with the same weaknesses that real humans have. Geoff Johns can't hold a candle to this now-classic material. If you want an action-packed, emotional, thought-provoking comic - this is your ticket.
  • Just arrived great book

Pressed by advancing enemy armies on both fronts, Adolf Hitler played his final card in World War II by mobilizing all German civilian males between sixteen and sixty and indoctrinating them for a final apocalyptic defense of the Reich. The Volkssturm, created as much to boost national morale as to bolster sagging defenses, has been viewed as a negligible factor in the war. David Yelton counters that view with new insights into why the German high command sought this means to prolong an unwinnable war-and why so many civilians chose to fight to the bitter end.

Hitler's Volkssturm is the only book in English—and the most comprehensive in any language—on the German militia, illuminating its role and contributions to the Nazi war effort and shedding new light on the last days of the Third Reich. It examines the militia's strategic purpose, organization, training, and combat performance on both war fronts and explores factors contributing to its sporadic tactical successes and its overall failure.

Yelton reveals why the Nazi leadership chose to assemble such last-ditch units rather than negotiating for peace and also why civilians in these units were more than willing to serve. The Volkssturm was, in fact, part of a broader, ideologically based strategy intended to turn the tide of the war. Yelton tracks the impact of this ideology on Nazi decision-making throughout the war's final year and illustrates how ideological assumptions were often a major reason for the failure of Nazi policies and strategies.

In an unprecedented examination of the Volkssturm at the local level, Yelton also shows the negative impact of national power struggles and demonstrates how the Wehrmacht, industry, and public opinion exerted influence on the militia in ways often contrary to its official objectives. His extensive and insightful analysis illuminates German mobilization priorities, reveals that a substantial number of its commanders had experience in both the military and the Nazi Party, and clarifies the impact of Volkssturm mobilizations on the overall German war economy.

Pathbreaking in both scope and depth, Hitler's Volkssturm stresses the factional lines and conflicting centers of power within the Nazi bureaucracy, clarifies policy formulation and implementation in the late Third Reich, and assesses the shifting power relationships among various groups and individuals. Ultimately, it gives us a more complete portrait of the Third Reich during the final phase of a devastating war and conveys important lessons about the use of militia forces in modern warfare.

PDF Hitler Volkssturm The Nazi Militia and the Fall of Germany 19441945 Modern War Studies eBook David K Yelton

"We have all seen the images of elderly gentlemen and young boys shouldering Panzerfausts and antiquated rifles. Such photos speak to the futility of the Nazi cause as the Second World War in Europe came to a rapid close. The Volkssturm, a last-ditch response was nicknamed the Krüppelgarde ('cripple-guard') or HJ-Spätlese ('late-vintage Hitler Youth'). Its members could not be termed fanatical, if anything, they wanted nothing more than to surrender and get on with defeat and reconstruction having recognized a lost cause.

The individual accounts of forced participation and ultimate capitulation are engrossing but ultimately sad. This is by far the best account of the Volkssturm's short service and ranks up there in terms of fascination along with the Hitler Youth and the Werewolves. All three groups represent examples of the Nazis power of propaganda rather than truly effective fighting forces."

Hitler Volkssturm The Nazi Militia and the Fall of Germany 19441945 Modern War Studies eBook David K Yelton Reviews

  • We have all seen the images of elderly gentlemen and young boys shouldering Panzerfausts and antiquated rifles.

All three groups represent examples of the Nazis power of propaganda rather than truly effective fighting forces.
  • I was a bit disappointed having read Yelton's Osprey booklet on the Volkssturm, but this is obviously an academic work intended for a different audience. Tiring too, was the overused construct of "they were pretty bad (sad, weak, untrained, ill prepared, etc.) but some were okay (capable, diligent, motivated, etc.)" This was repeated over and over.
  • The book was a bit dry. The main ding for the book was that it kept repeating itself as if it was compiled by several others. The good part was it this is the first book to really delve into the imense tug of war and politics of who gained and lost by creating the volksstrum. It was alot more complicated than just defence. The incrediable turf wars going on was good reading. Pictures would be helpful. The book was well written but not riviting. It is a critical addition studyier of military history.
  • I know this isn't exactly an "exciting" subject, but the style of writing of this book was really dull. Just lots of boring facts jammed together into chapters. More info on the organization and building of the Volkssturm, than actual history of the different units. Also very little on it's arms, other than a lot of complaining about how difficult it was to obtain them.
  • This book is a serious, in-depth look at one of the Nazis' last "miracles" against the advancing Allies toward the end of World War II, when the war was virtually lost. Masterfully researched and documented, Yelton's book reads a bit like a long academic paper, which stands to reason, as I believe the book owes its origins to Yelton's dissertation.

As the forward states, there is no one place or location that contains a significant cache of Volkssturm documents in Germany, so the author spent a great deal of time, energy and money to produce this work. It shows in the reading. Unlike many accounts of the Third Reich, most of which usually gloss over the Volkssturm, this is a critical look at the milita's origins, reasons for forming, the fight among Nazi leaders to lead the militia and its performance in battle.

A few tidbits that made for wonderful, surprising reading
    1. The Volkssturm "People Storm" was controlled by the Nazi Party, not the Wermacht. The reasons for this are many, but it largely contributed to the milita's mostly poor performance on the battlefield, with notable exceptions (also discussed in the book).

    2. Nazi leaders were fearful that Volkssturm members were going to be treated as partisans if caught by Allies and subsequently shot. Shockingly to this reader, the Nazis actually initiated contact with the British and Americans prior to the milita's formation to inquire how Volkssturm members would be treated if captured. Getting a positive response from Allied leadership that the unit would be treated as a legal militia (again, to my astonishment), the Nazis proceeded to form the Volkssturm. One can't help but wonder if the Allies had denied the Volkssturm "militia status" if the war would have been shortened on the Western Front, resulting in fewer Allied deaths.

The middle of the book is a bit of a dry read, as Yelton gets bogged down in a buffet of statistics. But, sticking with the book has its rewards, as Yelton discusses at length the militia's performance in battle toward the end of the war.

I would highly recommend this book to any student of WW II who would like to know more about the Volkssturm, its origins and performance in battle. "Hitler's Volkssturm" makes a welcome addition to any World War II bookshelf.
  • More than the battles, the book provides a comprehensive analysis of how
a bold military vision - fanatical, ideology-driven citizen soldiers defending their homeland - crashed with reality in the last months of the German Empire, such as the bureaucratic turf battles, the high hopes for the inspiring power of Nazi leadership dashed by the people's waning trust in them, the reality of the people preferring to work with the professionalism of regular Army units over propaganda- and ideology-heavy Nazi-centered organizing schemes, and the conflicting notions of fairness in the way people were selected and assigned to various war tasks. Many photos capture the cruelly ambiguous situation of the middle-aged and elderly soldiers, their ambivalent attitude toward their deployment, and the contrast between propaganda presentation and battleground realities. One can't but feel sympathetic for all those old soldiers many of whom must have also served in WWI, holding their ground with only substandard equipment and training (and fitness), and not much recognized in military history. Was interested in the subject since I'm in the similar age-group, and also am attracted to war situations that seem hopeless/pointless to the soldiers, soldiers who soldier on in the face of hopelessness and total skepticism. Germany's ally the Japanese Empire also had the same kind of plan for calling into soldier duty about the same age group, and just like Germany, contacted, asked for and got US to recognize their new teenage conscripts as official combattants and not irregular guerillas prior to the battle on Okinawa from April 1945.
