"A very thorough study of the helmets used by the armed forces of the various Latin American nations from the time of their independence to the present days. In particular, the book is thoroughly illustrated, providing rare photographs of these soldiers that, along with displaying their helmets, show their uniforms, weapons, and equipment. Highly recommended."

Les Casques Militaires French Edition Yves Plasseraud 9780982806302 Books Reviews
- This book covers the military helmets of every non-Anglophone country (Surinam excepted) in Central and South America and the Caribbean. The format is essentially that of the country articles in M.Plasseraud's earlier 3 volume Casques du Combat series (which the relevant articles in this book now effectively supercedes), but with more space to devoted to ceremonial as well as combat helmets. As in Casques, there is also background on each country's military and political development which gives a context to the factors governing helmet fashions (ie successive French, German and US influences.) As well as Army helmets, The articles also cover helmets issued to countries' police forces, navy and air forces as well as tank and airborne helmets, and accessories such as nets and covers (and even the types of goggles worn during Argentina's Falklands adventure). Obviously coverage varies from place to place, there is simply a lot more to say about Argentine or Brazilian helmets than about Haitian or Dominican ones, while Paraguay didn't even issue helmets to its soldiers during the Chaco War.
The French,in which the main text is written, is clear and easy to comprehend, without any grammatical or vocabulary flourishes that might make it a challenge to anyone with no more than high school or undergraduate French. The English and (I assume) Spanish summaries do capture the main developments, and are referenced to the illustrations in the text (which are numerous and usually in colour.) Yves Plasseraud and his collaborators merit our vote of thanks for putting this all together.
All in all this book worth getting and is a valuable refrerence for collectors, historians and military model makers. - A very thorough study of the helmets used by the armed forces of the various Latin American nations from the time of their independence to the present days. In particular, the book is thoroughly illustrated, providing rare photographs of these soldiers that, along with displaying their helmets, show their uniforms, weapons, and equipment. Highly recommended.
- As a collector of pre-1945 military helmets for some 40 years, I will say that this is the best and most comprehensive reference to Latin American headgear that I have come across. This is a long overdue book addressing one of the most obscure areas of militaria collecting. There is precious little information on any aspect of Latin American militaria outside of Spanish-language books published in the home countries, which are difficult to obtain. The militaria itself is also scarce and the author of this book has indeed performed incredible research to assemble so much information and good photos. I highly recommend this book.
- This is a great book. If you are interested in South American history, military history, military headgear especially helmets then this is a must. it is well laid out with good photos of helmets ("studio style" as well as "action shots") with some scetches and diagrams. The main text is in French with a Spanish and English summary. I am not a Francophone but even with a couple of years of schoolboy french I could follow the concise text. I would recommend it as well worth adding to the reference collection
- I have to say that a couple of pictures are not well printed or reproduced , but this is the only fault I've noted.
- Finally a book concerning an unsual field about helmets!
Mr. Y. Plasseraud, one of the author of the three books "les casques de Combat", this time signs a book dedicated to the helmets in Latin America.
The book is a mine of information on the helmets adopted or rejected by the states of this distant continent. Many photographs from private collections and museums, as well as in situ photographs illustrate the paragraphs describing the various models.
For each State, a historical and geopolitical developments in the country is used to replace helmets in their historical context. The helmet is not only an object of protection, but is a reflect of the political tendency of its time.
A summary in English and Spanish makes it accessible to non-francophones.
An excellent book for both helmets collectors, and history buffs!
